Hi there! I’m Toby Goldstein. Trainer and facilitator to business leaders and school managers for more than 13 years.

You’re an educational director or office team leader — and you’ve noticed that many people – and I mean very very many – lack interpersonal skills.

As a Program Coordinator, I noticed too. But, I didn’t only notice. I became a confidante of teachers, employees, and managers who, with sheer exasperation, vented their struggles. And I got this niggling sensation – I want to do something – I want to do something. You want to know what pushed me into action? A story of course!

Brand new school year, and I’m giving a workshop to my teachers. I’m preparing them to help students regulate their emotions

Things like – when a student gets MAD, they don’t need to throw down their knapsack or smack the kid nearest to them. And when excited, the student shouldn’t run around the classroom screaming and shouting. They can say how they feel, but they must keep proper decorum and not aggravate their surroundings.

So, I’m giving them strategies to direct their students – and one teacher pipes up that when she gets upset, people walk on eggshells around her.

Boy was I surprised! If you don’t know how to regulate your emotions, how can you teach your students too?

I knew I wanted to do something, but of course, I still did nothing. And then, this happened —-

I was prepping high school seniors for the workforce and placing them at internship sites during the summer - part of a government program.

Some students were wildly successful – they loved their placement and they were thriving. Others – even some very bright students – were floundering, and eventually lost their internship.

Baffled, I reviewed all the interviews, check-ins and comments. I compiled a whole lot of data, and noticed a freaky pattern… on the effects of subtle – and not so subtle – soft skills.

Let’s say it like this: The students with great people skills were consistently valued and promoted.

And that’s when I became determined to teach these skills to students young and old – in a way that would make a difference, i.e. not just “another fluffy workshop.”
